John 14:26 (ESV) But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.

The Word of God commands us to love God and many people never figure out how to do that. Many who are sincere about their relationship with Jesus do their best to obey His Word because they believe that He is the Son of God who came into the world to die for our sins. But to love Jesus from the heart escapes many Christians, and that’s a shame because as King David put it, His love is better than life (Psalm 63:3).

Whenever the Lord commands us to do something, you can be sure that He will provide what you need to obey that command. The way that He does that is through the Holy Spirit, whom the passage above calls the Helper. He not only helps you to obey, but he also helps you to love God. How does He do that? The Word of God tells us that the love of God is poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit (Romans 5:5). The love that comes from God through the Holy Spirit enables you to love the Lord with all your heart. Without the Holy Spirit and His love, we would be incapable of loving God like that. Without God and without the Holy Spirit pouring God’s love into our hearts, we experience love on a carnal level. If you look at the definition of love in 1 Corinthians chapter 13, you will find that what you call love looks nothing like what the Word of God describes as love. That’s why many times, our love relationships fall apart. While the love that comes from God never fails, human love does.

That’s why Jesus said that He would send the Holy Spirit. Remember that the Holy Spirit is one of the three persons of the Trinity. He is not a thing, but a person. He is simply the Spirit of Jesus that has come to dwell in us to empower us to not only love God, but also to empower us to love His Word and to obey it. But in order for Him to do that, you have to cede control to Him. As you do, you will be the beneficiary of being able to love the Lord with all your heart because experiencing His love and loving Him in return is the essence of life. Experiencing the love of God is amazing and being enabled to love Him with everything within you is life-giving and life-enhancing, one hundred-fold. Do what Jesus said for us to do and ask the Father to fill you with His Holy Spirit every day so that you can love Jesus with all your heart and live!
