Mark 14:6 (NIV) “Leave her alone,” said Jesus. “Why are you bothering her? She has done a beautiful thing to me.”
I don’t know if you feel like I do, but after all that Jesus has done for me, I find myself at a loss about what I can possibly do for Jesus, who is the Alpha and the Omega, and the Beginning and the End. Even when I give Him all the glory, it all belongs to Him anyway. When I praise Him, I am just, along with all of creation, acknowledging His goodness, His grace, His mercy, His love and His awesome and unfathomable power. I am not doing Jesus a favor by worshipping Him. As a matter of fact, I am doing myself good by doing so because when I worship Him, my life is blessed and enhanced. My soul soars when I worship Jesus in spirit and in truth!
So what could I do to do something good or even something beautiful to Jesus? A woman in Jesus’ day found a way and we read about it in Mark, chapter 14. This woman found a way to bless Jesus is such a tangible way that He called what she did to Him, beautiful. Notice how personally He received it. He didn’t say that she did it for Him, but “to” Him. This was not an emotional, spur of the moment act, but instead was a premeditated act of love and devotion. It was an extravagant display of love and devotion, as the price of the oil made from pure nard that she used cost about a year’s worth of wages and she used every bit of it to anoint Jesus. This over-the-top act also had a deep meaning, because the woman seemed to believe, know and understand that Jesus would soon die as He said that He would and she was symbolically preparing His body for burial. She was heavily criticized for what the others considered a wasteful act, but Jesus received it as a beautiful thing.
I want to do a beautiful thing to Jesus as well and if I do what this woman did, perhaps I can as well. While I can’t anoint His body for burial because Jesus already died and rose from the grave (hallelujah!), I can anoint Him with the oil of my gladness that He is my Lord and Savior and with the deepest love and devotion that He so deserves. Let’s do a beautiful thing to Jesus and love and serve Him with all of our heart, soul and strength for surely, He is worthy of it all!
