John 18:37-38 (NIV) “You are a king, then!” said Pilate. Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.” “What is truth?” retorted Pilate. With this he went out again to the Jews gathered there and said, “I find no basis for a charge against him.
Philosophers from ancient times up until the present day have always grappled with the question about truth. Is there even such a thing as truth? Today, the meaning of truth has changed in the world-at-large. Many now say that truth is whatever you want it to be. You can own truth. You can have your truth and I can have mine. Truth can be relative to whatever situation your in. There is no such thing as absolute truth, people say. I wonder if they include in that statement the very thing that they just said, because there is absolutely no truth in saying that there is no absolute truth. There absolutely is. It's absolutely true, for example, that if you walk off a high cliff on a mountain you will fall to your death. It's absolutely true that if you don't drink water for more than three days, you will die. It's absolutely true that if you don't wear the proper clothing in extremely cold weather, you will freeze to death. It's also absolutely true that you and I need a savior, and that Savior is Jesus.
When Jesus was talking to Pilate about the truth that He came to proclaim, Pilate got philosophical with Him and asked what truth was, as to question that there is such a thing. The Truth was standing right in front of him and he couldn't even see it. Jesus is the truth (John 14:6) and His Word is truth (John 17:17). His Word is truth because He is the Word. The truth is not relative, it's not subjective and it is absolute because the truth is a person: the Truth is Jesus! Jesus told Pilate that whoever listens to His words is on the side of truth. So the question is, what side are you on? Are you sometimes tempted to doubt that the Word of God is absolutely and infallibly true? The Bible is provable (although God doesn't need to prove anything). Countless prophesies have been fulfilled, with the most significant ones being the prophesies about Jesus in the Old Testament. Prophets foretold His coming and He fulfilled each prophesy to the tee. Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God and the Way, the Truth and the Life. Here's another truth: no one will get to heaven to be with the Father if they don't go by way of Jesus. That means surrendering your life to Him as Lord and Savior if you haven't done so. If you have, then it means living according to His words, which are truth for life forevermore.
Make sure that you are on the side of truth. Truth is powerful and effective when you follow it and adhere to it. It is useless if you just know it as head knowledge. You can know the truth about gravity and still fall to your death if you don't obey the truth about it. Now that you know what the truth is, get in line with it by getting in line with Jesus. It is then that the Truth will set you free!
