2 Corinthians 11:4 (NIV) For if someone comes to you and preaches a Jesus other than the Jesus we preached, or if you receive a different spirit from the Spirit you received, or a different gospel from the one you accepted, you put up with it easily enough.
Many people in the world today insist that truth is relative to their perception of reality. If that were true, there would be no truth and the world would descend into chaos. It's already chaotic enough because of sin but taking truth away would utterly destroy it. People who want to do their own thing want to make up their own truth to support what they are doing, and they do that to their own demise. If you are not living according to the truth, then you are living a lie.
With that said, some people do that same kind of thing with Jesus. Perhaps they don't deny that Jesus exists, but they make up their own version of what they want Jesus to be. Our culture today insists that things have changed for the better. No longer are we constrained with what we can and cannot do. If it feels good to you, then it's okay to do it. That's the way that the people of the world have always been but now that kind of thing has made its way to the church and the name of Jesus is being dragged into it. One example of this is when the courts redefined the definition of marriage in 2013. Now, it is no longer defined as God defined it, which is the union between a man and a woman. As surprising as that was, what was shocking was the number of people who considered themselves Christians who celebrated that decision. The reason that they gave was that Jesus told us that we should love everyone so in fact, love won when the traditional definition of marriage was struck down. The only problem is that God defines marriage as the union between a man and a woman and any other type of sexual relationship or union that we can think of is called sinful in the Word of God. It doesn't end there either. People are making up their own truths about what they believe and are attaching Jesus' name to it without any scripture to back those truths up. In other words, they are speaking about a different Jesus and a totally different spirit than the one and only true Jesus.
As we can see from the scripture verse above, this is nothing new. It didn't take long after Jesus ascended to heaven after having risen from the dead for people to begin to pervert the gospel and to try to make up their own version of who Jesus is and the same thing continues today. Jesus is not anyone that you want Him to be. Jesus is who He is and He has not ever changed nor will He ever change. Why? It's because he is the Truth and truth never changes. The Word of God tells us that He is the same yesterday, today and forever (Hebrews 13:8). Stay close to the one and only true Jesus by staying in communion with Him in prayer and through His Word, which is just as relevant today as it ever was. It is only the Truth, Jesus, who sets you free.
