Proverbs 21:3 (NLT) The Lord is more pleased when we do what is right and just than when we offer him sacrifices.

We many times forget that we were created in God's image. That means that if we are somewhat like God's image, there are things about us that are like God. Parenting brings out many of our God-like traits as most parents would do anything for their children, including giving their lives for them if they have to. That's why the way that we act with God is very puzzling. As parents, what do you think they'd prefer, a child who sings their praises but disobeys them or a child who obeys them and does what is right? Of course, all parents would choose a child who obeys and who lives right because in doing so, they know that the child is heading in the right direction for life.

We have gotten it so wrong when it comes to the Lord. Out of the many people that go to church once a week, how many do you suppose are actually living according to the Word of God that they hear every week? But they are there, week by week, even singing praises to the God that they don't even seem to know. A number of lead singers for well-known worship bands have come out and said that they are renouncing their faith, if they even had faith in the first place. A lot of them say that it was all a gig. It was something that was fun and interesting to do for a while. It was a performance. That's not worship. That is not a sacrifice of praise that the Word of God calls for (Hebrews 13:15). That kind of worship means absolutely nothing to God. Think about it. If someone were honoring you with their words but their heart was not in it, would it mean anything to you? I think not.

Many who go to church do it either out of guilt or to "satisfy God." They may feel like they are doing it for God when the truth is that we need to be there for ourselves. No wonder the Lord speaks about being sick of it all (read Isaiah 1:10-17). God is only interested in sacrifices that come from the heart, not ones that come by rote or by tradition. Above all, He is interested in obedience because He is interested in you. Obedience to His Word (which is what doing what is right is) leads to living a blessed life full of peace and joy, with the love of God as the foundation. It enhances everything about your life, especially your relationships. That is why the Lord is so focused on this.

In the end, God doesn't need one thing from us since He is all-sufficient. That is why meaningless sacrifices are just that, meaningless. Let's ask the Lord to fill us with His Holy Spirit so that we can live right and then we can offer him the right kind of sacrifice: one that comes directly from our hearts and that will be a pleasing aroma to Him.
