1 Corinthians 2:15-16 (NLT) Those who are spiritual can evaluate all things, but they themselves cannot be evaluated by others. For, “Who can know the Lord’s thoughts? Who knows enough to teach him?” But we understand these things, for we have the mind of Christ.
There are many times when we read something in the Word of God and we don’t quite understand it. Then instead of looking into it, we just move on. But this verse (like everything in the Word) is worth looking into because if we are being told that we as believers have the mind of Christ, that is something that should peak our interest. Elsewhere, the Word of God admonishes us to not conform to the patterns of this world, but to instead be transformed by the renewing of our minds (Romans 12:2). Having the mind of Christ would surely result in great transformation, but what does that mean?
When we receive Christ into our heart as Lord and Savior, it is not just a dry transaction that takes place like signing a contract. Instead, we enter into a life-giving covenant that leads to change from the inside out. One of the ways that this occurs is by being given access to the mind of Jesus. What I mean is that when you heart opens up to the God who made you, He opens up the eyes of your heart and opens up your mind to understand what you couldn’t understand before. The spiritual things that the Bible speaks about were gobbledygook to you. You couldn’t understand them or perhaps you thought them to be weird or non-sensical. But now, it’s all different. You can see it now. You can begin to understand it and the longer you follow Christ, the better and better you understand. That’s because you now have “the mind of Christ.” In other words, you have His perspective on everything. It’s almost like being able to see everything through His eyes. It all looks so different and it all makes sense now.
The verse above asks the question, “Who can know the Lord’s thoughts?” The answer for us is, “We can.” The people of God can know God’s thoughts as He reveals them to us. That is how He leads us and guides us in the way that we should go (Psalm 32:8). We must be careful, however, because we can slip back into carnal thinking, which always leads to trouble. That’s why we must stay in constant communion with Christ Jesus through prayer, the Word and by not separating ourselves from His Body, which is the Church. Stay close to Jesus so as you walk through the maze of this life on earth, you will have the foresight to know where you are headed and who you are heading to (Jesus!). It is we, the people of God, who understand these things because we have the mind of Christ!
