Psalm 56:3-4 (NIV) When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. In God, whose word I praise—in God I trust and am not afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?

Everyone, whether they admit it or not, gets afraid from time to time. Men in this country try to hide the fact that they get afraid and put on a brave front, even when they are trembling inside. There are a lot of scary things and scary situations that each of us face in life. It can be someone that is out to ruin you, a situation that has arisen that spells trouble, or a sickness or disease that you or someone you love is fighting through. Life has many things that can make you afraid.

That's why these two verses in Psalm 56 are so good and helpful. It tells us exactly what to do when we become afraid. It's simple, but not so simple. It's simple in that all you have to do is to put your trust in the God who saved you. Just trust Jesus! But it's also complicated because we have our feelings to deal with. After all, you have to deal with the reality of what you are feeling and are experiencing in your soul. You have to be able to see past the thing that is making you afraid. You have to take your eyes off the situation and put them on Jesus instead. You have to stop focusing on what is right in front of you that is against you and focus on what God has promised. You have to take Jesus at His Word. He said that He would be with you always. That means that He is right there with you through whatever it is that you are facing. When you are able to see that in your soul, then your fears go away and your peace returns.

All of this is dependent on your relationship with Jesus before trouble comes. Notice that David, the writer of this psalm, writes that it is in God, whose word he happens to praise, that he has put his trust. To praise God's word is to believe it, affirm it and live it. In other words, David had a real relationship with God. His was not a passing, casual relationship, but was one on which he relied heavily. He knew that God was with Him. That's why he could say, "what can mere mortals do to me?" It didn't matter if it was Goliath, or an army of normal-sized men that were against him. His response was going to be the same: he was going to put his trust in God who, by the way, he was worshipping and praising all along. When someone would rise up against him or when a problem would come, the Lord was right there to help him. David knew that there would be times that he would be afraid, but he already had a plan to deal with those times. He was going to trust in His God and not be afraid. You can adopt that same plan and live your life like David did. Serve the Lord and let His praise continually be on your lips. Then when trouble comes, put your plan into action. Put your trust in God and be not afraid!
