2 Chronicles 34:33 (NLT) So Josiah removed all detestable idols from the entire land of Israel and required everyone to worship the Lord their God. And throughout the rest of his lifetime, they did not turn away from the Lord, the God of their ancestors.

In the history of the people of Judah, there were a few good kings but many evil kings. As the kings went, the people went. In other words, when a new king would begin his reign by honoring God and serving him, then the people would serve and honor the Lord as well. When an evil king would reign and would set up pagan shrines and worship demon idols, the people would do the same. The prophet Samuel knew that it would be that way and he had warned the people of Israel that they should not desire for a king to rule them because of it. The people (once again) did not listen and Samuel, with permission from the Lord, granted their request. It turned out to be just as Samuel said and even though Judah had a few good kings, most of them were evil along with the evil kings of the Northern ten tribes (Israel), Both Judah and Israel wound up being exiled because of the evil practices and vile sins that they were committing, led by the kings that were over them.

King Josiah was one of the good kings that Judah had and he got to work making things right in the land by removing the idols and pagan shrines that had been set up by his grandfather, King Manasseh. Josiah's father, King Amon, also worshipped the idols that Manasseh had set up. But he didn't last long and Josiah became king at the tender age of eight. At sixteen, he began to seek the Lord and at twenty, he started to purify Judah and Jerusalem from the detestable idols that his grandfather had set up and that his father had worshipped. Because he sought the Lord, the Bible tells us that the people of the entire land (both Judah and Israel) followed and served the one and only God.

King Josiah was zealous for God and his desire from a young age was to seek Him and worship Him and to have the entire nation worship and serve the true God. Because of his example, the people turned away from idols and from their sin and turned to God. One person with zeal for God can have a great influence on others. Although we are not kings and although we may consider ourselves to be unimportant, we all have people that we can influence for good or bad. If you have children, you definitely will influence them one way or another. If you have friends, you can either influence them for good or for bad or even be influenced by them in the wrong way. Your coworkers can be influenced for good by you if you have a true love and fervency for the Lord Jesus. As you honor the Lord at all times in your life, those around you will not only notice but will be affected by your life of worship to the Lord. The time is short before the Lord returns. Now is the time to use you influence wherever you are and whatever situation you are in to point people to the only one who gives life eternal and in whom is found the peace and the joy that everyone is looking for. As you do, people around you will be affected for good and will serve the Lord throughout your lifetime as they did with King Josiah.
