Deuteronomy 4:29 (NLT)  But from there you will search again for the Lord your God. And if you search for him with all your heart and soul, you will find him.

When the people who had been liberated from bondage in Egypt by God finally finished their wanderings in the wilderness and were ready to go into the promised land, Moses laid out for them God's laws and instructions. He was warning them about idolatry and what the consequences of worshipping other gods would be. They would be exiled and scattered among the nations, losing the blessing of the richness of the land that the Lord was giving them. But with God, there is always an opportunity of redemption.

It is so clear from scripture, including the Old Testament, that when people do evil but repent and turn from their wicked ways, God forgives them. God has always been merciful to people with repentant hearts, no matter what they have done. He has always been a merciful God. Mercy didn't start with Jesus coming to this earth. Mercy is what God is all about. But in order for that mercy to be put into action, there has to be a genuine heart of repentance and a genuine seeking after God. In other words, you have to mean it when you search after Him. You can't do it half-heartedly or in a robotic fashion as with rituals and the like. You heart and soul have to be engaged in it. Jesus taught the disciples the same principle as well. He told them that it is the one who seeks who finds, the one who knocks that the door is opened for and the one who asks that receives. In other words, there is no play-acting that will be accepted by God. You either really want a relationship with Him or you don't.

Many Christians speak about not being able to connect with God. They say that He seems far away. If that is what you are experiencing, check yourself. Jesus does not move away from us, but it is we who move away from Him. If He seems far away, then your heart has moved far away from Him. The answer is to come back, searching after Him with all that is within you. If you do that, you will certainly find Him. He is there. He has been there all along.
