Psalm 31:19-20a (NLT) How great is the goodness you have stored up for those who fear you. You lavish it on those who come to you for protection, blessing them before the watching world. You hide them in the shelter of your presence…

One of the things that we as human beings really desire is protection. That’s why we have locks on our cars and on our doors at home. Our homes protect us from the rain, wind and storms. Our cars have seat belts to protect us if we are involved in car accident. Parents protect their children constantly from all kinds of danger and situations. Husbands and fathers have a built-in sense of the responsibility to protect their wives and their families. Protection is such an important part of preserving our lives. We get that sense of protecting from our Heavenly Father, because He constantly watches over us to protect us. But there is a condition to protection in all cases.

To be protected in your home, you have to lock your doors. If you leave your doors open and a thief comes in to steal your property, then it is your lack of vigilance that left you unprotected. If you get in your car and do not fasten your seat belt, then you have left yourself unprotected if you are involved in an accident. Protection requires action on our part to make sure that the things that are designed for our protection will be in place should the need arise. It is the same with our God. Our God promises to protect us but in order to protect us, we have to come under His care. To come under His care requires submission, which begins with a holy reverence for who He is. In order to be in God’s protection, you have to be with God. For example, if one of my sons wants to be under my protection, he must come into the protection of my home. If he decides to leave and live on his own, then he is on his own and will not be in my protection. To be under God’s protection, you have to be in His presence. Unless you fear Him (reverence Him), you will not be inclined to be in His presence. As a matter of fact, our sinful nature is repelled by God’s presence. We naturally shy away, run away and generally avoid God. But when our eyes are opened to our need of a savior because of our sinful condition and we are drawn to receive Jesus as our Lord and Savior, then along with that comes love, reverence and a worshipful heart for the God that saved us. That love, reverence and heart of worship keeps us in the presence of God, and it is there that we are sheltered and protected. Make sure that you don’t move away from God’s protective covering by moving out from His awesome presence. Along with His protection, you will also be showered with goodness as you put your trust in Him. How great is our God!
